To Be Reminded…

Seems like every week we’re getting hit with something.  Seems like we just can’t get ahead.  Yesterday, I had to break down and just cry.  Why can’t we get ahead?  Why can’t things just be smooth for a little while?  Just very weary…

I was reminded of a post I wrote back in April when I was in San Diego.  I need to be reminded…  So, if you need some encouragement today, I pray that this will speak to your heart.

Almost every morning while I’ve been in San Diego I’ve gotten up and gone for a run along the beach (thanks to my mother in law watching the boys!).  After every run I would sit down on the bench looking out at the ocean and watch the waves roll in.  Isn’t there something so beautiful and captivating about the ocean?  Many a day there have been numerous surfers riding the waves.  Some days it’s the experienced surfers and on other days I’ve seen the young and not so experienced learning to ride the waves.

Today as I sat out and watched the surfers surf, I thought about it in regards to my life.  Throughout life we face many waves.  In my family’s life, we’ve faced many waves over just the past few years.  Going through medical school, facing the unknown of where we would end up for residency, losing our baby girl, going through the financial struggles of wondering how we would pay our bills month to month.  Seems like every day there is a new wave to face or just the constant pummeling of the same waves over and over again.  How easy it is to become weary and worn out.

Yesterday as we walked the beach with the boys they got distracted in the sand and stopped in front of an intro class for surfers.  The instructor was giving them the rundown on surfing…the do’s and don’ts, as well as, what to do when the waves comes.  What I heard out of it all was to be strong, confident, and don’t let the waves take you.  The instructor informed the students basically that the waves would overtake you if you got scatterbrained, didn’t follow the ‘rules’, and just got scared.

As a believer in Christ, I have a Savior that has overcome those waves.  John 16:33 says, “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”  Because of my faith in Christ, and the Word that He has given me as an instruction manual, I should be able to boldly face those waves that constantly pummel me.  I should be like those experienced surfers, not fearing the waves that look like they will overtake me, but be ready to ride them knowing that God is in control of each and every one of those waves.

I pray that next time I see those waves coming that I don’t get scared or worried, but that that I turn my board toward the wave, head straight in, ready to ride the wave knowing that God has something great for me while riding this wave…intimacy with Him, a beautiful testimony.  And I can ride this wave confidently knowing that God is in control of each and every wave that comes my way!  Surf’s Up!

“2 Dear brothers and sisters,[a] when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.”
